Curriculum Vitae



Abbie Trayler-Smith was born in 1977 and grew up in South Wales. Whilst studying for her law degree at Kings College London she began taking
photographs for the student newspaper. Completely self-taught, she began working for the Daily Telegraph on a regular basis after graduating in
1998. She was given a full time contract for the paper in 2001.

Nine years on she has completed a huge variety of assignments: from the final burial of Haile Selassi in Ethiopia to the forgotten war in Sudan, the
famine crisis in Malawi and anniversaries at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii and the Falkland Islands. More recently she covered the tsunami and re-visited Banda Aceh one year on. She has visited Iraq, photographed the Rwandan killing fields for the ten-year anniversary and reported on the conflict in Darfur, Sudan with the veteran journalist Bill Deedes.

In September 2006, Abbie resigned from her contract position at The Daily Telegraph in order to freelance for a wider variety of clients and devote more time to personal projects. She is now represented by Panos Pictures in London


Awards



2002 Prime Minister Tony Blair presented Abbie with a special award for the Young Photographer of the Year at the Picture Editors Guild Awards 2002.
2003 Nominated in a record four categories, including Photographer of the Year at the Picture Editors Guild Awards.
2006 The Guardian Weekend Photography Prize, Commended.
2006 The Press Photographers Year Awards (short listed: News and Photo Essay)
2007 The Association of Photographers Awards 2007: Finalist in AoP Document.

2002 Childscapes: A visual journey through the UN convention of Children's Rights, held at Proud Central, Buckingham St, London WC2/
2006 After the Wave: The Tsunami Remembered held at National Theatre, London.
2007 The World Can't Wait: Oxfam highlights the issues the G8 must remember reminding world leaders to fulfil their promises and Make Poverty History in an exhibition held at The National Theatre, London.
2009 Still Human, Still Here: A solo show at Host Gallery in London EC1 documenting the underground world of destitute asylum seekers.
